Sacred Mountain – climate and species protection through reforestation

Many thanks for your support, which meant we were able to complete the project successfully.
project summaryIn Ecuador, a cleared, unused area is being reforested and developed into a flourishing paradise. With your donation of CHF 50, you help to restore a tropical mountain rainforest and make a contribution to climate and species protection.

Background

Climate change and species extinction are taking on threatening proportions and threaten to bring down civilised coexistence on our planet. Tropical forests provide a wide range of ecosystem services that enable humans to live well on Earth, and yet they are being destroyed faster than any other ecosystem. So the stakes are high.
As these developments continue, millions of hectares of land lie fallow because they have been "unusable" through mismanagement and consequently abandoned. We can use these areas to return them to nature and thus avert the devastating effects of climate change and species extinction.
Sacred Mountain is one such area that has been cleared, overused for livestock for decades and completely devastated in the process. The couple Walter and Susan Moora acquired the land in 2010 and have since wished to reforest their mountain. They asked us to organise and coordinate the planning and implementation of the project. Together we will create a flourishing green paradise on the barren land again!
Key data on Sacred Mountain:

  • Area: 273 ha (more than 380 football fields!)

  • Altitude: 1550-2330 m above sea level

  • Geographical region: Central Andes region in southern Ecuador

    • Climate: tropical monsoon climate (annual mean: 20.6 °C, 750-1000 mm rainfall)

    • Dry season approx. May - Sept

  • Natural ecosystem:

    • Tropical semi-deciduous montane forest of the western Andes.

Idea

Restore the natural forest on Sacred Mountain and thus create new habitat for the severely threatened animal and plant world and at the same time permanently store thousands of tonnes of CO2.
All in all: making a valuable contribution to climate and species protection.
The foundation stone for this will be laid in a two-year pilot project starting this year. The aim of this crowdfunding is to cover the wage costs for the coordinator, who will supervise the project on site and make it possible in the first place, for one year.

Implementation

First, the completely barren, eroded soil must be regenerated by rehydrating it and increasing its humus content. To do this, swales are first dug along the contour lines, which stop rainwater run-off and allow it to seep away, and trees are planted from cuttings. The cuttings grow very quickly, stabilise the swales through their root system, produce large amounts of biomass for soil building, fix nitrogen and create a good microclimate in which the seedlings to be planted later can thrive.
An experienced coordinator is needed on site to coordinate the many complex tasks. With Cristian Ojeda, a long-time friend of our close local partners, Finca Sagrada, we have the ideal person for the job. As a self-employed small businessman, he coordinates regular orders for private clients, hires workers, organises materials, handles payments and manages with fixed budgets. In addition, he already has some experience with permaculture and reforestation - among other things, he created the finca's food forest. Cristian is very close to nature and knows the local flora and fauna well.
He is supported in his work primarily by Walter Moora, biodynamic farmer and owner of Finca Sagrada. However, our team is also in constant exchange with other partners - including representatives of the Universidad Nacional de Loja and the Universidad Técnica Principal de Loja.
The local project coordinator plays a central role in the successful implementation of the pilot project. Therefore, the aim of this crowdfunding is to secure the salary costs for his position for one year. For this we need your help - be there and support our commitment from the very beginning! Together with Cristian, Finca Sagrada and you, we will create a green paradise for wildlife on Sacred Mountain and thus set an example for a future in harmony with nature!

Initiators

The project was launched by the non-profit association Árbol Co(n)razón from Basel (Switzerland). We have already made great efforts to acquire broad knowledge, elaborate the concept, build connections and look for supporters. Now we are ready for the next step: the two-year pilot project to reforest Sacred Mountain. Help us implement this next step!
Thank you very much for your donation <3

News from Ecuador

Thanks to your help, we have already planted over 1,000 trees and over 2,000 agaves! Our employees are incredibly hardworking and motivated. This year, we want to additionally measure and optimize the efficiency of our previous measures.

Half a year after our last update, we would like to tell you about the progress of our reforestation project in Ecuador. In our last update we promised you that we would soon start planting the first trees. On November 15 - almost two months later - the field work started. On the first day, Zia Parker, an experienced permaculture designer from Vilcabamba, gave a workshop on Rainwater Harvesting about planting swales. In the following five weeks until the Christmas break, our field team, consisting of our project coordinator Cristian, his foreman Jonathan Pinta and the two farm workers Ricardo and Jonathan Calva, have already planted a total of about 1,500 trees and agaves. At Christmas, they received a small gift from us as a thank you for their strong commitment to reforestation.

In the first week of January, they were joined by Susana and Gina, who have become permanent members of the team and are working very diligently. Until the time of the video shooting we have already planted a total of almost 1'000 trees and more than 2'000 agaves. Today, the day we post this update, we are already well over 1,200 trees and around 2,500 agaves for our living firebreaks. We are very confident that our hard working field workers will be able to nearly double these numbers by the end of the rainy season. Then, at the start of the dry season, they will install irrigation for a portion of the reforestation area and cut additional firebreaks around the reforestation areas (removing the dry grass).

Using different approaches this year, we want to learn as much as possible about the cost-benefit ratio of different measures, such as irrigation and swales, and optimize the efficiency of our reforestation step by step.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

We would like to thank you again from the bottom of our hearts for your support for our project and especially for your trust in us and our reforestation! Without you, the successes we can report today would still be a long way off. We are therefore very grateful to you that we have made this project possible together and hope that we will continue to work on this project together!
