Capture CO2

Unfortunately the project hasn't met our fundraising goal.
project summaryTransport companies must create a rapid ecological transformation. Capture CO2 technology ensures that up to 90% of emissions can be captured. Your donation of 50 CHF can create the alpha prototype.

Background

QAPTIS is a spin-off of IPESE (Industrial Process and Energy Systems Engineering), a lab of the EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) led by Prof. François Marechal. This project is committed to a greener tomorrow, with the goal to contribute to solving climate change challenges in the transportation industry by capturing the emissions at their source. Indeed, trucks and ships are together responsible for more than 10% of the global CO2 emissions and are part of the hard-to-abate sector that will have to face new regulations : a decrease of 50% by 2050 for the maritime sector and 30% by 2030 for the road sector. There is a strong pressure to make it happen fast and efficiently, which electric and hydrogen solutions have not yet been ready to offer.
To answer this challenge, we are working on building a prototype capable of capturing 90% of CO2 emitted by trucks and ships, storing it in liquid form and then recycling it into different materials or synthetic fuel. QAPTIS is offering a ready-to-use solution allowing transporters to meet CO2 regulations without the need of renewing their whole fleet to electric or hydrogen trucks as the technology can be retrofitted on existing vehicles.

Idea

We all once dreamed of a different world, this is certainly why we enjoy reading comics. Remember the Belgian comic, Gaston Lagaffe? With his supernatural habit to cause disasters, Gaston invented the first version of the QAPTIS kit in a way. He put a balloon on his care tailpipe, so it would capture all the CO2 and other pollutants emitted by the car. But knowing he is always goofy and clumsy, everything leaked out of the balloon and went back into the air. This is how the idea of QAPTIS was born! Gaston made a disaster, François Marechal made a project with a strong ambition out of it. He gathered a team and all together we are working on making the best out of QAPTIS, in order to be part of the shift of the transportation industry. From Gaston’s capture to QAPTIS, inspired by the Latin “Captis” and Esperanto “Kapti” meaning “capture”, refers to the universal language because QAPTIS is facing a worldwide issue.

Implementation

The project is divided into 3 stages:
Stage 1 - the first stage that we are in right now, is the construction of the Alpha prototype: we are proving that the CO2 captured on synthetic gas mixture is possible. Parallel to this, we are working on creating our company, QAPTIS, that should be founded in 2021.
Stage 2 - the second stage starting mid-2021, is the Beta prototype: we will try the technology on a truck and see if other pollutants like NOx, SOx and fine particles can be caught as well. This will be conducted in partnership with the Mobility Lab (supported by La Poste Suisse) and a professional heavy vehicle garage (Véhicules Industriels AS) will provide facilities to work on the truck and ensure adequate installation.
Stage 3 - planned for 2022, and ongoing, is called “the demonstrators”, where the technology will be used in real cases.
This project will allow the creation of a circular economy around CO2 capture and help transport companies to make an easier and faster ecological transition by offering a complementary solution to electric and hydrogen heavy vehicles.
