YPY - the beginning

Many thanks for your support, which meant we were able to complete the project successfully.
project summaryThe Atlantic Forest will be preserved by buying and handing over parts of it to the Mbyá community. Your donation of CHF 40 will support climate protection and at the same time make a contribution to preserving habitat as well as flora and fauna.

Background

The Atlantic Forest originally covered over 1.3 million km² from Brazil to Paraguay and Argentina, but 83-93% of this area has already disappeared due to deforestation. The forest stores enormous amounts of CO2, which is released when it is cut down. The remaining forest is a natural means of protection against climate change.
Deforestation is also destroying the natural habitat of the Mbyá communities and the enormous diversity of the local flora and fauna. Unique plants and the world’s southernmost population of jaguars call the Argentine Atlantic Forest home.

Idea

The project is committed to the purchase and transfer of the remaining forest areas to the Mbyá and is intended to preserve the forest’s climate protection function. The traditional communities of the Mbyá live sustainably and in harmony with the Atlantic Forest. Even overused forest areas can regenerate for centuries by absorbing large amounts of CO2 and serve as CO2 sinks. The Atlantic Forest has developed over 60 million years and is one of the most species-rich habitats in the world. Conserving it will also help jaguars to survive.
Sagittaria has already handed over 253 hectares to the Mbyá and ensured the preservation of the natural habitat for people and animals.

Implementation

In Argentina, there is an opportunity to make enormous progress in protecting the forest. Around 300 hectares can be purchased from private ownership, while a company in Argentina is offering parts of the forest in its possession for sale.
The privately owned forest areas are to be gradually purchased and handed over to the Mbyá. In future projects, there is also the option to buy the company’s larger forest areas. All in all, there are currently many opportunities to protect the Atlantic Forest, combining climate protection with animal welfare and plant protection, plus the preservation of natural habitats and lifestyles.
In Argentina, indigenous peoples have the possibility to create legal entities that can own forest without having to pay property tax. In return, they are obliged not to resell the forest and to use it exclusively for themselves. This means the forest is not only protected by the Mbyá, but also legally.
Donations will make it possible to transfer parts of the 300 hectares of forest to the Mbyá, thus securing the natural habitat and ensuring its protective function for the climate and the animal world. The 300 hectares of forest will be purchased over eight stages.
