Eco Centers for Nature Conservation in Bangladesh

Unfortunately the project hasn't met our fundraising goal.
Project SummaryPeople in rural Bangladesh are increasingly under pressure due to the consequences of climate change and increased prices for consumer goods. Six eco-centers are planned to be built, which will carry out awareness-raising and climate protection programmes such as reforestation. Help and contribute to climate protection in Bangladesh!

Background

Due to rapid urbanization, price hike in gas, poverty and other external pressures, rural population life in Bangladesh became more challenging. In search of cheaper fuel, people have no choice but to cut down trees without any permission and regulation which not only decreases the natural appeal but also affects the geography and climate of the project area (districts of Shariatpur, Madaripur, Gopalganj and Faridpur). The lack of trees results in river erosion, rise in temperature and increased vulnerability to frequent natural disaster. Apart from that, Euro Bangla Foundation’s observation indicates that frequent road and bridge construction puts a heavy effect on the nutrition of the soil. Moreover, a lack of awareness leads people to pollute the river which acts as a primary source of drinking water and home to many species. In this way, the pollution endangers human’s health and the ecosystem.

Idea

To combat human-induced climate change in Bangladesh and thus improve the quality of life of the citizens, we want to raise awareness and implement conservation measures. For this purpose, we want to establish six eco-centers with the function of: Raising awareness, distributing tree and fruit seedlings and carrying out rehabilitation activities after disasters. We also want to start a river and pond cleaning programme and a recycling programme to process 100 tonnes of waste within four months. To prevent soil degradation, extensive use of organic fertiliser will be introduced and emphasis will be placed on afforestation measures.

Implementation

With the donations, Euro Bangla Foundation will establish six eco-centers in six parts of the project area. The eco-centers will distribute 1’500’000 tree and fruit seedlings over a three-year period. Trainers and staff will be recruited to oversee these centers, organize educational events, and provide assistance during natural disasters. To prevent soil degradation, area-based programs will be implemented such as use of organic fertilizer, soil testing, and reforestation to prevent soil erosion. Under this project, community volunteers are assigned to collect waste from rivers and ponds and process it appropriately.
The donation target of 40’000 CHF covers the establishment of the six eco-centers. If any money should be left, it will be used for the programs and maintenance.
The entire project has a total duration of five years. The project’s process will be monitored and reported by the local project manager.

Initiators

Euro Bangla Foundation (EBF) implements this project in Bangladesh. The association Hilfswerk Bangladesh, registered in Liechtenstein, supports the Euro Bangla Foundation and has therefore initiated this project. Miah Nurul Islam, the founder of both groups, is currently citizen of Liechtenstein.

Hilfswerk Bangladesh was established in 2010 and has 11 regular members and 4 board members. In the association's brief history, several projects have been carried out in Bangladesh with the help of EBF. These include: microcredit-related operations, establishment of tree nursery, financial help for surgeries, establishment of Euro Bangla Foundation Model School in rural area. Apart from that, EBF regularly provides aid to vulnerable communities after disasters.
