The Covid-19 pandemic caused all the schools in the Philippines to shut down, and the children have been restricted to staying at home for months. The Rise Above centers were also forced to close down and were only given permission to open with the purpose of catering to the children on our Educational Sponsorship Program. All education in the Philippines is now distance learning or e-learning, but poor families do not have computers and children are given paper modules for learning, supposing with parents help. The problem is that poor parents are uneducated and unable to teach their children. Thus, the service we offer of having 22 children study at the Rise Above Community Center is of utmost importance for their learning and not falling behind in their studies. These children were given permission to attend classes since they live in the slum by the Rise Above Community Center. Most children from rich and middle class have computers at home, so they are well equipped for this kind of study. The poor cannot afford computers, much less internet connection, which is very expensive in the Philippines.
It is for this purpose we are seeking funding for laptops. We have a few but are lacking 15 laptops for the Education Sponsorship Program. In the Philippines, a laptop costs about 35.000 pesos which is equivalent to about 660CHF.
