Support for the children from Moria refugee camp.

Many thanks for your support, which meant we were able to complete the project successfully.
project summaryThe children from the burnt down Moria refugee camp are suffering hardship. Your donation of CHF 20 can improve the situation in the new camp. Andrea Cathomas Jenny is committed to this – support her and the UNICEF aid project.

Background

The Moria refugee camp on the island of Lesbos in Greece was one of the main reception centres for refugees travelling to Europe. The constant influx of people combined with inadequate policy led to a complete overcrowding of the camp. In March 2020, the camp hosted more than 20,000 people, despite only having capacity for 2,800. Children and young people, in particular, were impacted by the poor infrastructure and did not receive adequate care.
In September, the devastating fire destroyed most of the camp. The situation is still very drastic, especially for some 4,000 children who are still there. The approximately 12,000 inhabitants of Moria lost everything in the fire. Helpers are working around the clock to provide the children and families with the most basic necessities. A new temporary camp was built in Kara Tepe to provide shelter for children and families. But even the new camp lacks fundamental necessities: the people there urgently need clean water, food, soap and beds. And with the weather getting colder, children and families also need warm, dry clothes and blankets.
While the conditions in Moria were beyond inadequate, recent reports from various aid organisations (including Oxfam) state that the new camp is particularly concerning and even worse than Moria.
There are unaccompanied minors in the camps, and parents are often overwhelmed when it comes to providing adequate care for their children. This is why outside support for children in the camp is needed.

Idea

Fundraising campaign to support children in the Moria refugee camp. I work as a freelance photographer. My siblings and I are working together to collect donations for these children. To help raise money, I offer photo shoots and donate all the proceeds to this cause.
Last year, thanks to a full day of photo shoots and extra donations, CHF 11,000 was raised for the aid organisation Helvetas. The donations were used specifically for work in the world’s largest refugee camp, hosting Rohingyas in Bangladesh. Due to current tragic situation, we decided this year to donate to the UNICEF project for refugee children from the Moria camp. UNICEF was involved in the construction of the emergency camp and is committed to caring for the children there.
In order to amplify the impact of the fundraising campaign, we want to give people the opportunity to participate and donate beyond the photo shoots. We are asking people to think of the most vulnerable in our society and to make sure children’s basic needs are met.

Implementation

The photo shoots will be held on 22 November and 6 December in Ilanz and Suhr. Family, couple and portrait photography can be booked for CHF 150. Due to popular demand last year, we are offering two days this year. All time slots are already fully booked, so no further requests can be accepted – which is good news for the campaign. You can still play an active part in the project and help the children by donating.
Based on last year’s experience, we expect to raise CHF 15,000 to CHF 20,000 in donations with the photo shoots. To further boost the campaign, you can also donate here and involve your friends and family. We want to reach a total of CHF 20,000 this year to help alleviate the suffering of the children in the camp. Every little helps, and we hope we can rely on your active support. The funds raised will be transferred to UNICEF at the end of the campaign.
