Nina House - Empowering girls and creating opportunities

Project SummaryThe Nina House in Harar (Ethiopia) has been active since November 2025 and is already making concrete progress in the fight against female genital mutilation (FGM) through counseling, workshops, and awareness-raising among the population. In 2026, the project is set to be expanded in a targeted manner – with more space and a stronger team, additional school sponsorships, and the launch of an “income generation” program that will enable young women to shape their own futures.

Background

Since the successful launch of Nina House in Harar (Ethiopia) in November 2025, we have been able to celebrate small successes on a monthly, weekly, and even almost daily basis, and combat the still deeply rooted practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) with its serious health and psychological consequences with concrete measures.
Every day, we strive to reach mothers, fathers, and those who will soon become parents, to gain their trust, break down prejudices, and protect girls from female genital mutilation. Our detailed surveys of the local population have confirmed that FGM continues to be practiced in the community and therefore requires support at various levels.

Idea

Nina House is designed as a movement that lives with and for the population. After initial very successful experiences with workshops, counseling sessions, and the involvement of public authorities, the goal for 2026 is to establish Nina House among the population, to secure concrete willingness to renounce female circumcision, and to convince further segments of the population with concrete success stories.

In concrete terms, this means that our team needs to grow, that we need to have the resources to be visible on a regular basis and with a wide reach, and that project participants see a concrete benefit from their participation.

  • The Nina House premises are already reaching their limits. We need more space and are looking for opportunities to operate at various locations in Harar. Our team also needs reinforcement in order to meet the rapidly growing demand for workshops and counseling.

  • The first highly visible awareness-raising events were very successful. They were made possible by a great deal of volunteer work. In 2026, regular events will keep Nina House in the public eye.

  • The Nina House school sponsorship program must grow: the offer to enable girls to attend school regularly in exchange for not undergoing circumcision creates concrete, sustainable incentives and allows for support throughout the entire phase from childhood to young school leavers.

  • Fit for the future: Young women who have career prospects are less dependent on their families and their demands. In 2026, the Sara Aduse Foundation will launch an income generation project, creating further incentives for girls to avoid circumcision and strengthening the path to becoming strong, self-determined women.

Implementation

To achieve these goals, we need your support. Your support will help us directly and sustainably:

  • For a strong team and a safe space for counseling and education: In 2026, we expect additional costs of CHF 6,000 for room rental and salaries, which we would like to finance with the help of this crowdfunding campaign.

  • Visible and audible to all: Our first public appearances were very successful. In 2026, we urgently need to become even more accessible: With simple messages for people without education and access to leading media in print and electronic form: We are budgeting CHF 4,000 as a contribution from there for you for recurring communication measures with a wide reach.

  • Growth of school sponsorships: By multiplying the number of school sponsorships, we can ensure that girls escape circumcision: our budget for this is to be increased by CHF 8,000 in 2026 with funds from this campaign.

  • Income generation development: Young women need start-up assistance to be able to earn an income. In addition, our concept, which involves the manufacture and distribution of hygiene products, requires specialist knowledge and a test phase. With CHF 12,000 from this campaign, we will be able to kick-start a successful young female entrepreneurship project.
