An 11-year-old girl overheard that the aunt she worked for as a domestic servant was going to circumcise her. She fled. A woman found the girl and brought her to the Bangr Nooma organization (Association Bangr Nooma, ABN), which knew because of the radio. ABN did a lot of educational work on the radio beforehand. This saved the girl from circumcision.
A young woman got married. The husband wanted her to be circumcised because tradition demanded it. She sought help from ABN and the man was educated. Today, he works as an imam against the cruel ritual of female genital mutilation.
Many women come to ABN because they suffer from the consequences of genital mutilation. They undergo emergency operations in which their vagina is reconstructed so that they can live without excruciating pain again - and thus also give birth in a natural way. There are different varieties of genital mutilation, including those in which the entire labia are cut away and everything is sewn back up again except for a small hole. Babies, girls and women die because of this practice.
ABN has been working on making the practice of female genital mutilation disappear since 1989. Founder Rakieta Poyga has already achieved a great deal with the organization. With the donations, part of which are generated through Terre des Femmes e.V. (TDF), several radio programs have been broadcast in recent years and reached a large part of the population. Among other things, teachers have been trained, cooperations with politics and the police have been cultivated, tribal leaders have been educated and much more. Last year, many activities had to be scaled back because there were too few donations due to the COVID-19 outbreak. As we know, there is a big setback for women worldwide. That is why it is all the more important, especially now, to keep up the education and to finance emergency operations.
