Creating space for children in need of care and their families

Many thanks for your support, which meant we were able to complete the project successfully.

Background

Parents of seriously ill or disabled children are constantly living at their limits. To prevent them from being overwhelmed, at least in a part, the hammock offers weekend and holiday places for children in need of care. The hammock is a fully equipped substitute home and is open to all families who need relief because they are caring for their seriously ill or disabled child at home. This gives families the freedom they urgently need.
Caring for a disabled or seriously ill child is a 24-hour a day, 7-day a week task. This leads to both physical and mental fatigue - a condition that parents do not always want to recognise. In order to support the families concerned and prevent burn-out, Kinderspitex offers weekend and holiday places in the hammock for babies and children in need of care.
Thanks to this relief, parents and healthy siblings get time for themselves and time with their parents.

Idea

When parents reach their limits, they should be able to give their child to a e.g. daycare center to recuperate. On the days when their child is in the hammock, parents can put aside the caring tasks - which take up a large part of being a parent with seriously ill children - and do something good for themselves. During this time, their child is fully looked after: in the hammock, the little ones receive everything they need for health reasons, as well as customised games, excursions and other activities.

Implementation

The hammock is a fully equipped substitute home with its own room, toys and security - everything is there. The children can move around according to their abilities, and of course everything is wheelchair accessible. If necessary, there are as many carers present as there are children. The children enjoy being in a different environment, being able to play with other children and getting new input from other carers - just like most ordinary children.
As health insurers do not cover the costs of respite care, the Swiss Children's Spitex Association bears most of the costs for this complex care itself. The hammock is therefore dependent on the support of donors. Thanks to the donations, it is only possible to provide parents of disabled and seriously ill children with this urgently needed time out. The cost of a week's holiday per child in the hammock is CHF 1,000. By reaching the donation target, we can react quickly in emergency situations. Five weeks of holidays made possible can be used for families who have exceeded their breaking point.

Initiators

Swiss Kinderspitex Association
For over 20 years, the qualified carers of the Swiss Kinderspitex Association have been working tirelessly for families with children and babies who need special care. Where the children feel safe and secure - at home. The attention of parents and siblings helps the child to recover more quickly or to live as well as possible with a chronic illness. Caring for children presents affected families with major physical and psychological challenges - our aim is to provide them with lasting relief.
