Clean drinking water for schoolchildren in Nepal's lowlands

Project SummaryMany schoolchildren in Nepal drink arsenic-contaminated water every day - with serious consequences. We install simple filter systems directly at schools and thus supply entire school communities with clean, healthy drinking water.

Background

In several regions of Nepal, the groundwater is contaminated with arsenic - an invisible poison that causes serious damage to health over many years. Children in rural schools in particular drink this water every day without realising that it is harming them. The consequences range from skin diseases to cancer and developmental disorders. There are often no alternatives: no water pipes, no filters, no education. The victims are entire school communities - above all the children, who instead of safe drinking water only get danger from the tap. We want to change that: With integrated, arsenic-filtering water systems, taps and sinks, we bring clean water to where it is needed most - directly to the schools.

Idea

We install arsenic- and bacteria-filtering drinking water systems directly at schools. In this way, we reach many children at the same time - safely, sustainably and close to their everyday lives. Schools are central locations in the communities and enable a comprehensive supply of clean water. The integrated, robust filter systems remove both toxic arsenic and pathogenic germs from the water. By installing taps and sinks, children can drink directly on site at any time - without any risk to their health.

Implementation

The project has been running since 2023 and is already a great success: the original plan was to install drinking water systems at 30 schools - however, due to the enormous demand, 57 schools have already been supplied with arsenic- and bacteria-free drinking water. Implementation is taking place in the lowland regions of Nepal, specifically in Nawalparasi where the need is particularly high. Together with local partners, we select specific schools, install the systems and train school staff in their operation and maintenance. The project is particularly sustainable, as local specialists are trained in maintenance and all necessary replacement and consumable materials are provided for five years.
The total material costs for one school amount to CHF 2,500, which includes several water tanks, a multi-stage filter system, taps, sinks and maintenance materials for five years. The donations go 100% towards these material costs - directly to where they are needed.
Our donation target is CHF 5,000 - this will enable us to equip two more schools with safe, arsenic-free drinking water and give children a healthy school day.

Initiators

Skat FoSkat Foundation is a non-profit NGO based in St. Gallen that has been working for over 20 years to ensure safe access to water and decent living conditions in countries of the global South. Together with local partner organisations, we develop practical, cost-effective solutions that have a long-term impact. The project in Nepal is particularly close to our hearts because arsenic-free drinking water is not a matter of course - but it is a human right. Seeing how the health and future of entire school communities can be improved with simple means motivates us anew every day.
