Nina House – Dialogzentrum gegen weibliche Genitalverstümmelung
Project SummaryTogether we can stop FGM! Nina House creates a safe space for education, dialogue and hope in Ethiopia. Make a donation to help give girls and women a self-determined future!
Background
Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a practice that affects over 200 million women worldwide. It involves the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injuries carried out for non-medical reasons. FGM is a deeply rooted tradition that goes far back into the past and continues to be practised for cultural and religious reasons. However, female circumcision is an obvious violation of fundamental human rights and must be stopped, as the health and psychological consequences are serious. Female genital mutilation is also carried out in many communities in Ethiopia. Around 25 million women, often under the age of 15, are subjected to FGM in Ethiopia. However, the locals are often unaware of the consequences and continue to practise FGM out of tradition. The Sara Aduse Foundation, whose founder herself experienced and coped with circumcision and the resulting physical and psychological consequences, is committed to fighting FGM in the long term. The foundation works in Switzerland and Ethiopia to counteract this practice through education, awareness-raising and empowerment.

The Nina House is a project that is being set up in the city of Harar. Harar is characterised by a rich history and culture and at the same time an area with a high practice of female genital mutilation. Nina House provides a safe space for women and girls to receive support, counselling and education. The strategy is to fight FGM sustainably through dialogue and communication. The exchange over coffee together also alludes to a long-standing tradition in Ethiopia and helps to create encounters that might not have existed before. The project will also offer a range of activities to sensitise communities, empower girls and women and promote girls' health.

Nina House is intended to serve as a meeting centre and break cultural taboos through dialogue and education. Through various stages of development - from a rented space to a café with integrated training rooms - the centre will become a place for education, encounters and exchange. In existing premises, we will create an open offer on certain days, which will serve as a place for development and as a contact point for an unprejudiced approach to female genital mutilation (FGM). A café - operated by the organisation's own staff or as part of a lease model - is intended to contribute to the visibility of the project in the long term and enable financial independence. We want to create low-threshold access for all target groups through free Wi-Fi and open doors.
In addition, training and education rooms are planned in which prevention, healing and social alternatives to FGM can be discussed in a safe environment. These spaces create room for dialogue - whether individual or in group exchanges - and help to break down cultural and social barriers.
The overall project requires a budget of around CHF 93,000. As at the end of June 2025, CHF 28,000 had already been secured through funding partnerships and donations. The remaining funding requirement is therefore CHF 65,000, of which CHF 35,000 is to be raised via the there for you donation platform.
With your help, we can realise Nina House - for health, protection and a self-determined life for girls and women in Ethiopia. Join the fight against FGM!
