Background

Real-time medical remote monitoring (MFE) is a beacon of hope for families with severely ill and highly dependent children, who often endure immense physical and emotional strain.

For many parents, caring for a severely ill or highly dependent child is an ongoing challenge that regularly pushes them to their limits. The need for nightly monitoring deprives already exhausted parents of much-needed sleep, and the constant worry for their child's well-being prevents them from finding rest.

MFE offers valuable support here, enabling parents to finally sleep again without the oppressive feeling of leaving their child unattended. Knowing that skilled professionals are monitoring their child’s health around the clock restores a sense of normalcy to their lives.

In emergencies, parents often feel overwhelmed and helpless. MFE acts as a lifeline, with experienced caregivers always available to guide parents through crises, providing clear instructions and calming anxious minds.

Idea

Real-time medical remote monitoring (MFE) offers numerous advantages for patients and their families. A trained caregiver can monitor up to six patients simultaneously from an MFE center, allowing parents to rest and find peace of mind.

Experienced professionals can detect potential crises early and guide parents through them. While parents attend to their child, doctors can be connected from the center to provide instructions and initiate further actions, such as calling an ambulance, if needed. This comprehensive support ensures that parents feel less isolated in challenging situations, receiving professional, round-the-clock assistance.

Implementation

Real-time medical remote monitoring (MFE) requires a comprehensive technological infrastructure, including monitoring stations and portable devices that continuously capture vital signs. These devices transmit real-time data such as heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and temperature to monitoring stations, relying on secure, encrypted data transmission and seamless integration with existing IT systems. Technologically, MFE relies on sensors, secure transmission channels, central monitoring stations, analysis software, and cloud infrastructure.

On an organizational level, training for medical staff and family members, along with strict adherence to legal requirements for data protection, are crucial. This blend of technical and organizational components enables effective and safe remote patient monitoring.

DONATION USE: To fully equip one patient with home-based remote monitoring, the following components are required:

  • A state-of-the-art monitor with integrated sensors (3,500 CHF)

  • A high-performance camera with specialized software (600 CHF)

  • A reliable PC for data processing and transmission (400 CHF)

This setup allows vital data to be securely collected, processed, and transmitted to the central monitoring station. With a total investment of 4,500 CHF per patient, professional remote medical care can be provided in the comfort of the home. Reaching the donation goal of 18,000 CHF will fund four patient setups.

Initiators

Thomas Engeli is an entrepreneur, publisher, and father. Together with his partner Patricia Engeli, he founded the Swiss Children’s Home Care Association in 2000 to support the care of infants, children, and adolescents with special needs in Eastern Switzerland.
His motivation for founding the association stemmed from a personal crisis: Silvan, his youngest child, suffered from a severe metabolic disorder and required nearly constant care. This challenging situation led to Patricia’s breakdown, and Engeli realized that there were few resources available to provide real help and support for affected families.
