Kipepeo Family Support – So that children can stay with their families

Project SummaryThe Kipepeo Family Foundation supports families in the Kilimanjaro region whose basic needs are not met, so that children do not have to live on the streets or in homes. Through targeted social work, educational assistance and income-generating projects, the programme creates new prospects and enables families to live self-determined, secure lives.

Background

Many children in Tanzania still grow up without their parents. Not because they have no family, but because poverty, illness or violence tear families apart. Often there is a lack of housing, income or medical care to enable them to live together.
The Kipepeo Family Foundation encounters this reality every day in the Kilimanjaro region. It is committed to ensuring that children are not abandoned, but can grow up in their family environment.
"It's not that I didn't love my child enough to leave him alone. It's that I didn't know how we would survive if we stayed together. I saw no other choice but to leave my son behind in the village and hope that someone would take better care of him than I could. Today, I know that there is help available that I can take advantage of."
This quote from a mother in Moshi shows how essential Kipepeo's work is – it gives families the chance to be reunited.

Idea

The family forms the foundation of a child's life. Many children who live on the streets or in orphanages still have living relatives. When families are strengthened socially and economically, children can stay with them permanently.
Our goal: to give all children the opportunity to grow up in a loving and safe environment.

Implementation

The families are selected by local chairpersons and social workers. Support is provided to families whose basic needs such as health, safety or education are not met – or where there is a risk of children living on the streets.
Kipepeo provides individual support, first aid and assistance in establishing a safe home – for example through medical care, school fees, renovations and small income-generating projects.
In 2024, 35 families from eight villages received support, 23 children received schooling, and for the first time, boys who had previously lived on the streets completed their training as mechanics and carpenters.
The work is partly cross-financed by the Kiwavi Home guest house and the Kipepeo Farm, which is intended to create long-term independence. However, donations are still needed for ongoing social work – the target is CHF 7,000, around a quarter of the annual budget of CHF 28,000.

Initiators

The Kipepeo Family Foundation was founded by Joy Baumann (Switzerland) and Nixon Simba (Tanzania). The local team of social workers is very familiar with the culture and reality of life for these families.
The Swiss association Kipepeo in Brienz provides administrative and financial support for the work.
