Insight Cambodia - School Drinking Water Project
Project SummaryIn many schools in rural Siem Reap, children lack access to clean drinking water – with serious consequences for their health, attendance and ability to learn. Through the Safe Drinking Water School Project, Insight Cambodia is working with the Kamboo Project to equip schools with bio-sand filters, wells and water infrastructure. This provides pupils with a reliable supply of drinking water and a real chance of a healthy, successful school day.
Background
In rural Siem Reap, Cambodia, children often do not have reliable access to clean drinking water. Contaminated water sources lead to illness, increased absenteeism from school and reduced learning ability. Without a safe water supply, many children lack the foundation for a healthy and successful school life and thus the chance to escape the cycle of poverty.

Through the use of bio-sand filters, new water sources and appropriate infrastructure, pupils gain reliable access to clean drinking water. This reduces illness, increases attendance and supports a focused and healthy school day.

For the Safe Drinking Water School Project, we work closely with local schools to identify facilities where access to clean drinking water is particularly urgent. Kamboo Project takes care of the entire implementation on site, including the installation of bio-sand filters, the construction of wells, the installation of water tanks and hand washing stations, and all construction work.
We at Insight Cambodia accompany the process and provide direct support by being on site during installation, working with the schools and helping to hand over the new infrastructure. In this way, we ensure that the measures are implemented smoothly and that the school community can use the system effectively right from the start.
By reaching our fundraising goal, we can secure a sustainable drinking water supply for a school, including the installation of a bio-sand filter and a water well.
Specifically, this includes a bio-sand filter for $1,350 and a water well for $350, totalling $1,700.

The approach taken by Insight Cambodia and Kamboo Project combines health promotion, prevention and improved learning conditions in a direct and measurable way. The installation of durable biosand filters and local water infrastructure creates sustainable benefits that extend far beyond individual school years. Its integration into the school environment is particularly effective, benefiting both children and teachers in the long term and significantly reducing illness and absenteeism.
