Help to respond to the needs of children with disabilities affected by war in Yemen, Sanaa

Background
Both mainstream and specific education and therapy services for children with disabilities available to them were already limited before the civil war in Yemen, but have now been almost completely decimated. Barriers include destroyed service facilities, the absence of suitable services, remoteness, stigma, discrimination and many other obstacles. The project thus aims to improve access and delivery of special needs education and therapy services for children with physical and mental disabilities in Sanaa, Yemen by providing operational support to the local centre for disabled children. So far, the centre has provided special needs education and therapy services to numerous children in Sanaa under the supervision of trained specialists that ensured their involvement in society. The centre is still not financially supported by the local government. The continuation of its services is therefore still largely dependent on donations collected by our organization. Thus, Y30 kindly asks for your help to further facilitate wellbeing and learning of the children within the safe and secure environment in the centre.

Securing the salaries of seven special needs teachers is a priority for us. All of the teachers are locally certified professionals with ability to provide a wide range of services, which includes special needs training, speech and language therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, occupational therapy and recreational therapy. These kind of therapies focuses on teaching children various interaction and life skills as well as encouraging them to explore their talents through various activities. Since this kind of public services are not available in the area and all of the children are from very poor households, they depend on the centre being maintained. For them, the centre is the basis for their wellbeing and learning.
It is important that the teachers can assume financial security. This way, they continue to be committed to the centre and can secure their family's livelihood.

Implementation
The donations will be used directly to pay salaries for seven special needs teachers. Compensation and conditions of work will be described in contracts, and compensation will be provided regularly. Adequate compensation will enable personnel to focus on their professional work without having to seek additional sources of income to meet their basic needs. Only if we can pay the great and motivated team of teachers adequately, we can continue to provide special needs education for the children. If the donation target is reached, the centre will be able to serve up to 50 children on a regular basis. The target amount will cover salaries of seven special needs teachers working part-time for one year, every donation beyond the target will help to compensate the rent and the special transportation costs for the children to school.

All of our projects are coordinated and funded from Geneva, whereas they are implemented in Yemen by our sister organization Y30 Development (Y30D) and local partners with the help of Yemeni professionals, allowing us to identify acute beneficiaries’ needs and strengthen community-based structures.

Children with disabilities are dependent on loving support; especially in times of war and crisis, they suffer greatly since there is hardly any support. In this regard, valuable work is carried out in the "Vision for a Better Future" centre for the further development of the children. Only professionals can ensure meaningful support that allows the children to lead an independent life as much as possible. The project is extremely effective and important as the children would otherwise not receive any support. The operation of the centre also contributes to several SDGs (especially Goals 4 and 10).
