Vegetable gardens for children in the Kati Cercle

Unfortunately the project hasn't met our fundraising goal.
Project SummaryThe NGO Everybodyneedswater is planning a vegetable garden in a school in Mali to protect local biodiversity, address climate change and provide healthy food for the children. This project will not only improve the food supply, but also enable the children to develop a strong environmental awareness.

Background

The humanitarian situation in Mali is appalling. Violent attacks by armed groups affect the civilian population in most parts of the country. As a result, an estimated 8.8 million people (42% of the total population) will need humanitarian assistance in 2023. In addition to the already very challenging situation, Mali is also suffering greatly from climate change. Malian children in particular are suffering greatly from the difficult situation. In the Cercle Siby region, some school children have to walk more than 8-15 km to school. They therefore have no possibility to go home at lunchtime. For financial reasons, they cannot afford a picnic and there is no school canteen in the schools shared by the two villages of Komanfara (112 children) and Niaganabougou (193 children). Therefore, the pupils of these two schools often have to go hungry, which disturbs their concentration, among other things.

Idea

We, everybodyneedswater, want to help these students. We propose to create a vegetable garden in a school to preserve local biodiversity, fight climate change and at the same time ensure a healthy diet for the children. The vegetable garden will ensure that the children have enough to eat, while educating them about environmental protection. In addition to the school gardens, we would like to organise further reforestation and environmental protection measures to combat desertification and sensitise the children to the climate challenges of the future.

Implementation

In order to sustainably improve food security, our goal is to plant a vegetable garden in a total of 12 schools. This crowdfunding will finance the pilot project in the joint school of the two villages Komanfara and Niaganabougou.
In this school we will plant a vegetable garden of about 30 m². Vegetables will be grown there and fruit trees will also be planted. The pupils will be supervised by an agricultural engineer who is responsible for the district of Siby and our agricultural engineer Keita Bougory. The two agricultural engineers will supervise the activities, advise the children and teachers and organise the activities in cooperation with the different stakeholders (authorities, schools). Our aim is to build an agriculture that is able to feed the pupils without jeopardising social relations and destroying the environment, but based on the dignity of the communities (their history, their wisdom) and respect for the territory and its ecological balance.

Initiators

Everybodyneedswater is a Swiss NGO that has been working for the well-being of the population for over 10 years, especially through access to water.
The project in Mali is being implemented with the NGO 2AEFE, a local NGO in Mali that has been working with us for five years and with whom we have already built more than six latrine blocks.
