Our own training center in Guinea

Project SummaryWe are building a new training center for young people in Conakry, Guinea. By constructing our own building, we are permanently reducing fixed costs for rent, water, and electricity, enabling us to give more young people access to education, protection, and a self-determined life.

Background

Guinea is one of the poorest countries in the world; over 60% of the population cannot read or write. For many families, even primary school is unaffordable – and girls are the most affected. Without education, they have no chance of finding work, no prospects, and are often married off early and against their will. In the long term, there is only one solution: education that protects girls and enables them to lead self-determined lives.
The KIRA association has been working to help disadvantaged children and young people in Guinea since 2018. At our current training center, young people receive a three-year apprenticeship in tailoring, learn to read and write, take part in workshops on sexual health, violence prevention, and leadership topics, and thus acquire important life skills – the key to independence and a self-determined life. Many of the graduates are later able to earn their own living and become active, respected members of society.
We will start the third course in 2026. The demand for training places is growing rapidly: our waiting list is getting longer every year. At the same time, the cost of living in Conakry is rising rapidly. The rent for our current training center has already increased several times and is set to cost twice as much next year as it did when we started. Water and electricity costs are also rising sharply. Every franc that goes toward fixed costs is directly taken away from the training of young pe

Idea

In order to secure our commitment in the long term and at the same time be able to support more young people, we would like to build our own training center. A place that offers young people protection, education, and a real future for many years to come.

With our own building, we can:

  • increase the number of training places from the current 22 to 50

  • massively reduce fixed costs and invest more financial resources directly in training

  • install a solar roof and save electricity in a sustainable way

  • build our own well and become independent of expensive water deliveries

  • provide our graduates with an additional year of support so that they can make the transition to independence

In this way, we create more impact, more stability, and more future for the people who need it most.

Implementation

The first important step has been taken: we have already purchased a plot of land in Conakry where the new training center is to be built. Now we want to construct a safe, functional building there that can be used in the long term.

How the project will be implemented:
The training center will be planned and built entirely by a local architectural firm and local workers and craftsmen. The building will offer enough space for 50 students, including training rooms, sanitary facilities, common areas, and space for workshops and additional offerings such as reading and writing or violence prevention.

The project will be financed from various sources: our own funds, foundation partnerships, and contributions from this crowdfunding campaign. The total budget for the construction is around CHF 50,000. We hope to raise CHF 13,350 through crowdfunding. These funds will go towards the first key implementation steps:

  • Architectural planning

  • Preparation of the construction site with thorough cleaning and clearing of the site.

  • Earthworks: The foundation will be dug by hand, cavities filled, and the ground stabilized.

  • Purchase and transport of building materials

This will create the basis on which the training center can be built.

Initiators

Behind this project is the KIRA association, founded in 2018 by Saran Mischol, who was born in Guinea and now lives in Switzerland. Her personal experiences continue to shape KIRA's work to this day. During her regular visits to Guinea, she saw how many children—especially girls—have no chance of getting an education and are trapped in a cycle of poverty, dependency, and early marriage.

Saran describes her motivation as follows:
“Through my regular visits to Guinea, I saw the increasing poverty. I started to support individual children – but I quickly realized that more was needed. Education is the surest way out of poverty. That's why I founded KIRA.”

This conviction has given rise to a dedicated team: Volunteers in Switzerland and a motivated local team in Guinea are working together to give young people access to education, protection, and self-determination. You can find out more about KIRA on our website.

With the new training center, we as a team are taking a big, sustainable step: we are creating a place that opens up long-term prospects. Support our project and help us build a new training center for young people in Guinea!
