Beds for Mukuru Secondary School
Project SummaryWith your donation, you will provide 40 young people at Mukuru Secondary School in Tanzania with safe places to sleep and good learning conditions. For CHF 175, you can finance a complete set consisting of a bed, mattress, bedding and furniture – so that the students can make the most of their education, well rested and refreshed.
Background
The region around Mount Mukuru in northern Tanzania is home to around 900 Maasai. The families live from cattle breeding and some agriculture. Poverty and hunger are omnipresent, and education has long been of little importance.
For 18 years, Africa Amini Alama – founded by Dr. Christine Wallner and now run by her daughter Dr. Cornelia Wallner-Frisée – has been working to improve living conditions. Thanks to a major sponsor, a dilapidated primary school has been transformed into a modern school and a secondary school has been built nearby, which is already designed to accommodate four year groups.
As secondary schools in Tanzania are run as boarding schools, each new year group needs beds, bedding, tables and chairs in addition to the existing classrooms and dormitories. These are currently only available for the first year group. However, a second year group will soon be joining the school. The rooms are still empty.

Idea
Education gives children from poor regions the chance to lead independent lives – and also improves the long-term situation of their families. Inspired by this idea, Africa Amini Alama began construction of a government secondary school in the Mukuru area in 2023. The first 40 pupils have been attending the school since January 2025. The focus is on English language training, as without these language skills there are no career opportunities in Tanzania.
The boarding school allows them to concentrate fully on their education – for this they need safe dormitories with beds and furniture.

Implementation
For the new students of the 2026 cohort, 40 beds with mattresses, bedding, blankets, tables and chairs are needed. The furniture will be made by trainees in welding and carpentry at the Africa Amini Alama vocational training centre. The bedding will be sewn by the tailoring apprentices. Only mattresses and blankets will be purchased. A complete set costs CHF 175 – a total of CHF 7,000 for one year group. With your support, you will give 40 children a safe place to sleep and the opportunity to follow lessons well-rested.

The project is supported by the Swiss association with Helga Dancke on the board. For 18 years, Africa Amini Alama has been bringing together projects in medicine, education, social affairs, sustainable agriculture and tourism.

The project improves educational opportunities in one of Tanzania's poorest regions by providing safe places to sleep and an environment conducive to learning – key prerequisites for success at school. Studies show that good sleep and suitable infrastructure significantly improve learning performance. The local production of beds and furniture at the Africa Amini Alama training centre is also particularly valuable, as it creates additional career opportunities. Africa Amini Alama has already successfully implemented several projects via there for you, consistently impressing with its excellent execution – a guarantee of sustainable impact in this project as well.
We will send the donation receipt (for Switzerland) in January of the following year.
