I am Soraya, single mother of Joël (25 yrs) who was born with birth defect 390. Basically, this means developmental delay, walking disability and muscle weakness. As well as a severe S-shaped scoliosis, which causes severe breathing problems due to heart and lung constriction.
With my possibilities, I have always promoted Joël's autonomy and health development, thus enabling him to integrate into our society. Thanks to a lot of external help, which we were able to experience again and again, Joël is today a joyful person who is very active, loves contacts, works within his possibilities and thus takes his place in social life.
Against all prognoses, this was possible thanks to Joël's consistent therapy and additional stays at a health resort in Tenerife recommended by doctors. In a specially designed therapy centre there, Joël was helped to achieve more and more stability, independence and improved cardiopulmonary performance.
However, health insurance and disability insurance do not cover therapies abroad, even though they are prescribed by Swiss doctors. Thankfully, with the help of foundations, we were able to provide Joel with this therapy stay again and again over the years, which stabilised him more and more over the years.
Two years ago, however, the contingents of the foundations were exhausted due to limitation regulations that are supposed to ensure a fair distribution of support for those in need.
Therefore, I could no longer provide Joel with these therapies.
Despite uninterrupted treatment in Switzerland, his condition has now deteriorated massively. After a fatigue bone fracture of the leg, we received the diagnosis - high-grade osteoporosis. His cardiopulmonary activity has also deteriorated greatly due to the massive scoliosis and the lack of air climate in Tenerife.
Joel is far too young for osteoporosis medications. These are not approved for people his age. Therefore, the only option is to expose Joel to strong light and sunlight to ensure remineralisation of his bones.
The doctors' current prognosis is more fractures, especially in his spine and chest. If his back breaks, it could mean the end of his life, or at least a life in a wheelchair and massive pain. Therefore, Joel's doctors urgently advise me to bring my son to the climatic conditions of Tenerife as soon as possible, combined with a therapy programme in the specialist centre there.
In addition to the light and sunshine conditions there, the conditions characterised by volcanic rock and sea also contribute to a uniquely healing climate for patients with needs such as Joel.
His Swiss doctors therefore strongly advise this stay for at least 6 months on Tenerife over the winter half year. This will help Joel regain bone autonomy. In addition to the optimal healing climate, the adapted breathing therapies and brain stimulation are also carried out in the special centre there, which are not (yet) offered in this way in Switzerland. Thus, the stay will lead to a lasting improvement for Joel.
