Background

Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world and continues to face deep-rooted development problems that affect millions of young people and their families. Almost three quarters of the population (73%) live in poverty and the majority of young people grow up without prospects. Girls, AIDS orphans and children from the poorest families are particularly affected.
In addition to poverty, recurring crises also hamper the country's development. Cyclones, floods, droughts and conflicts in the north exacerbate the already fragile situation, destroy livelihoods and undermine long-term resilience and growth.
ASEM gives hope:
In this difficult environment, ASEM makes a decisive contribution to giving children and young people hope and prospects. Since 1991, ASEM has supported over 200,000 young people with education, care and career guidance. Every year, around 6,000 children receive direct assistance, helping them find a path to a self-determined future. ASEM also reaches around 30,000 family and community members.
Through comprehensive educational opportunities and individual support, ASEM gives young people the chance to lead self-determined lives, thereby laying the foundation for sustainable development in Mozambique.

Idea

Education as the key to the future

ASEM is committed to opening up real prospects for young people in Mozambique. Targeted educational support enables young people to break the cycle of poverty and dependency. The new scholarship programme gives disadvantaged young people access to universities and vocational schools, including full coverage of training, accommodation, meals and psychosocial support.

In this way, education becomes a driver of social justice and sustainable development in Mozambique.

Implementation

Education gives people a future

The 2026 scholarship project gives young people from the poorest backgrounds in Mozambique the opportunity to pursue an education, whether at university or through vocational training. Young women and young people from rural and conflict-prone regions receive particular support. In this way, ASEM creates prospects where hope is often lacking.

Your donation changes lives

  • With CHF 200, you can finance individual support and social counselling for one year

  • With CHF 500, you can finance one year of transport within Mozambique

  • With CHF 600, you can finance learning materials (laptop, books, etc.) for one year

  • With CHF 1,250, you can secure accommodation for two semesters

  • With CHF 3,000–5,000, you can enable a young person to complete a whole year of education – and accompany them on their way to a self-determined future.

Long-term impact

Many former scholarship holders now work as teachers, doctors or social workers and pass on their knowledge to the next generation. Your support thus becomes more than just education: it is a driving force for social justice, gender equality and sustainable development in Mozambique.

Initiators

The scholarship project is supported by ASEM Switzerland in collaboration with ASEM Mozambique. ASEM was founded in 1991 by Barbara Hofmann, who has lived in Mozambique since 1989. Through her tireless efforts, she has since given over 200,000 children and young people access to education and opportunities for the future.
In Switzerland, a team of volunteers is passionately committed to fundraising and coordination. Thanks to the close cooperation between local experience in Mozambique and organisational support in Switzerland, the scholarship project is implemented in a practical, efficient and sustainable manner, giving young people hope for a better life.
