Water and better living conditions for the poorest people!

Many thanks for your support, which meant we were able to complete the project successfully.
Project SummaryIn Amandji, Middle Benin, people are struggling to survive. The lack of water is life threatening and there needs to be change!

Background

The water basin that collects rainwater is the only source of water the poeple in Amandji have. Due to the climate change, it hardly ever rains in Benin and, as a result, the water basin does not fill up. This situation is becoming life-threatening.
Because we work with affected people all the time, we quickly came across the problem of Amandji. We included the local population in the planning of this project. They were involved in the planning process both as recipients and as contributors. Together we decided on a sustainable, cost-effective and easy-to-operate well.
Amandji has been abandoned with the water problem at both the local and national level, and no measures have been taken to help them. The lack or scarcity of rain due to climate change makes water access all the more difficult for the village. Potable water is necessary for nutrition, health, hygiene, relief from pain and dealing with diseases. Additionally, it is also essential for the education of children and adolescents as well as for electricity and against environmental pollution.

Idea

«Water is life’s matter and matrix, mother and medium. There is no life without water. » So Albert Szent-Györgyi. The scarcity of water, especially during the dry season, creates several challenges and life-threatening situations for the people of Amandji. Hunger (cooking without water is not possible), constant thirst, infant mortality (every year one out of three children dies from lack of water), diseases (people regularly get ill with diarrhoea and anaemia because of the dirty drinking water) and the threat to their livelihood and existence are daily companions.
The idea and goal of this project is to reduce water shortages and the human suffering associated with it by building and running a hand-operated water well for the village. This will provide Amandji with an inexhaustible, safe, risk-free and clean source of water. In addition, the establishment of a committee to manage the water well will create new jobs. The committee will be made up of residents, who will be given a seat on the board and advisory committee. The board will consist of three members and a chairperson for management. One person will be the secretary and write all reports, manage the well and schedule meetings. A treasurer will control and compile income and expenses through the sale of water for financial reports. Seven management and administrative professionals will form the advisory committee to provide advice on the management of the water well. The committee will hold regular meetings. Through the revenue and the committee, the long-term maintenance of the well is also ensured and access to water is provided for free or at a reduced cost to poor people and families.

Implementation

The well is to be constructed by the regional company ILSEFER, which, among other things, specialises in the construction of wells and has already gained a lot of experience in this field. As a personal responsibility, we pay the craftsmen ourselves. The village chief provides us with possible locations to carry out analyses which allow us to locate water under the ground, especially where it exists in abundant quantities and can be made inexhaustibly usable.

  • June 2022: Inauguration and start of operational use of the water well.

  • June 2022 : Establishment of a local committee to manage the water well.

  • July 2022:  Participatory project evaluation and final report (end of project).

 Costs:

  • Hand pump: 1,300,000 FCFA/ 2090.98 CHF.

  • Margelle (construction of the border stones) : 407'765 FCFA/ 655.87 CHF

  • Water borehole: 1'900'000 FCFA/ 3056.05 Swiss francs
