School construction for disadvantaged girls and women in Kenya
Project SummaryHOFOGI is committed to building an education centre in Migori, Kenya, to create more space for programmes in tailoring, handicrafts, business management, agriculture and education. Help them to train up to 30 girls and women a year and free them from the spiral of poverty.
Background
In Migori, Kenya, the agricultural sector is dominant and women are affected by discrimination and educational inequality. The HOFOGI association is committed to freeing girls and women from the poverty spiral by providing targeted training programmes and support. Women have limited educational opportunities and are affected by problems such as early pregnancies, school drop-outs and HIV/AIDS. HOFOGI supports girls and young women aged 17-25 from financially disadvantaged families to enable them to lead a self-determined existence.
The construction of an education centre is intended to tackle these challenges and support girls and young women in Migori. The project was successfully launched in spring 2024 and further steps are now planned.

Idea
We currently work in two small rented rooms that only have space for 10 participants each. In order to expand our programmes, we are planning to build additional classrooms and set up a computer room with a library on one of our properties in Migori. Depending on interests and abilities, the following support programmes are available: Educational programmes:
Education and sensitisation:
In addition, the students are also involved in selling the products they make themselves, such as cases, laptop bags and cushions, they learn sales skills and can earn at least a modest income. On 10 February 2023, we celebrated our first graduation in Kenya with 10 graduates who completed their tailoring training with top marks in the state examination.

Implementation
Our aim is to create a centre that will educate up to 30 girls and women a year and free them from the spiral of poverty. An architect has already drawn up the plans for the education centre and we are ready to start construction. The total budget for the construction is CHF 91,500, for the first step we needed CHF 14,000. Step one was to pay for the approval of the government and the county for the construction drawing so that we can start the construction. We were able to achieve this with the first crowdfunding project with there for you. Now we are moving on to step two. CHF 22,000 is needed for this phase, which will be used in the following steps:
Step 1 - Starting the scaffolding of the building.
Step 2 - Roofing of the building.
Step 3 - Installation of the windows.
Help us to realise our vision and build this centre. Together we can create enough space to support and educate more girls and women so that they can break out of the spiral of poverty. Join us and accompany us on this journey. Your support makes all the difference. Thank you very much!

HOFOGI
Claudia Masika comes from Kenya herself and works with the aid organisation HOFOGI (Hope for Girls) to ensure that girls and young women from poor backgrounds in Kenya receive vocational training. Claudia has been based in Switzerland for around 15 years and has established herself as a top act as a musician with her international band. She is also a convincing and expressive painter of unique and colourful pictures. The same applies to her creations as an idiosyncratic fashion designer, which are nonetheless trendy and not in line with current fashion trends.
