SamOS – Help for people in need
Project SummaryOn the Greek island of Samos, Volunteers for Humanity supports refugees who are forced to live in precarious conditions. Together with its partner organisation Just Action, it provides hundreds of people with food, clothing and hygiene items every month.
Background
The Greek island of Samos is located just one kilometre off the Turkish coast. People stranded in Turkey risk a dangerous journey across the sea to reach Samos. Since the new refugee camp opened in 2021, the centre has been repeatedly overcrowded. Conditions in the camp are precarious, with a lack of food, medical care and hygiene. Added to this is the psychological stress caused by constant surveillance by cameras and prison-like high-security measures.
As voluntary aid work in Greece is strictly regulated and running our own project on site requires a lot of resources and a constant presence, we decided in 2021 to collaborate with the local partner organisation Just Action. This organisation distributes food parcels, hygiene items and clothing to those in need. Our association covers part of the cost of the necessary relief supplies.
Support is provided in the form of donations in kind and financial contributions. Project manager Nicole Grogg travels to Samos several times a year on a private basis and regularly visits the partner NGO. These visits have resulted in a very efficient and targeted collaboration.

Idea
To enable Just Action to continue its important work on the ground, Volunteers for Humanity not only supports it with donations in kind from Switzerland, but also provides monthly financial support. With EUR 1,000, the association makes a small contribution to the running costs and enables the purchase of food that can be distributed to the people.
Thanks to this support, 744 people were provided with food, clothing and hygiene items last month (25 October).
In order for the support to continue on the ground from January 2026, Volunteers for Humanity is dependent on financial contributions.

Implementation
In return for this support, the association receives the relevant receipts each month, as well as a monthly report from the partner organisation. This ensures that the donations have actually been used as intended.

Initiators
The tax-exempt association Volunteers for Humanity was founded in 2016 by Marit Neukomm in response to the refugee crisis. She received the ‘Aargauerin of the Year 2016’ award for her commitment. After several years of involvement in Syria, Greece and along the Balkan route, since 2018 the association has specialised in sending medical aid supplies to war and crisis zones. However, the association remains true to its core mission of providing emergency aid to refugees with its support on the Greek island of Samos.
