Save wild honeybees – build knowledge, implement solutions
Project SummaryFreeTheBees is the only organization in Switzerland dedicated to the protection and research of wild honeybees. With its discovery trail in Vaulruz (FR), the association has created a place where children and adults can experience firsthand why these animals are vital to the survival of our ecosystem as wild animals.
Background
Honeybees are a central part of our ecosystem. What many people don't know is that they originally lived as wild animals in our forests. However, intensive forestry and agriculture have caused their habitats to disappear almost completely – as a wild animal, the honeybee is now highly endangered.
Nevertheless, they are not yet protected. The FreeTheBees association is the only organization in Switzerland dedicated to researching and protecting wild honeybees. Initial studies by FreeTheBees show that they still exist – but of the 400 bee colonies discovered after five years of research, very few are surviving. Urgent action is needed.
To make this knowledge tangible, the “Honeybee and Biodiversity” discovery trail was created in Vaulruz (FR). Here, environmental education and practical nature conservation come together to raise awareness of the honeybee as a wild animal and the importance of intact habitats.

Idea
FreeTheBees wants to raise awareness of the invisible world of wild honey bees. Our idea is to combine education with concrete action. With projects such as Swiss wild bee monitoring, the construction of tree hollows and nesting sites, and educational programs, we create transparency and solutions at the same time. The discovery trail in Vaulruz is a central place of learning and encounter where visitors of all ages can experience how wild honey bees live and why they are irreplaceable for biodiversity.
