Background
We are active in rural areas in Africa (Senegal, Burkina Faso, Benin, Guinea and Madagascar), Asia (Myanmar and Vietnam) and the Peruvian Amazon. There are systematically higher levels of poverty in these areas compared to urban areas. To meet their needs, many engage in agriculture, which generates just enough income. The main part of the income is used for school and medical expenses, for example. Food insecurity is also common, e.g., due to unsuitable agricultural practices, problems with storage and processing or land insecurity.
These challenges are further intensified by climate change. Environmental destruction leads to conflicts between farmers and pastoralists or between locals and newly arrived people who want to settle on the remaining usable land. This in turn leads to a fragmented basic infrastructure and it becomes difficult to meet basic needs (education, access to clean water, health care, mobility, social protection, etc.). In addition, higher disease and mortality rates result from these structural problems compared to urban areas.

Idea
Nouvelle Planète supports approaches that empower marginalised populations living in rural areas in disadvantaged and remote regions of Africa, Asia and Latin America to help themselves and protect their environment. The aim is to reduce poverty and improve the resilience of these populations. We place great emphasis on local structures and needs, thereby ensuring the sustainable impact of the projects:

The high dependence on agricultural produce means that rural communities are at the mercy of external factors, which is exacerbated by climate change. Nouvelle Planète's work supports local initiatives in sustainable agriculture, sanitation, education and environmental protection. This improves the quality of life of disadvantaged communities in the project regions in the long term. The long-term monitoring of the rural communities guaranteed by Nouvelle Planète significantly increases the effectiveness of the projects.
