Emergency aid for the victims of the earthquake in Syria

Many thanks for your support, which meant we were able to complete the project successfully.
project summaryPeople in Turkey and Syria are currently in an emergency situation due to the strong earthquakes. The local aid organisation Kids Paradise can provide immediate help to the people in north-west Syria and southern Turkey. Support the people on the ground!

Background

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Turkey and northwest Syria on the night of 6 February 2023, leaving a trail of total devastation in its wake. It is one of the worst quakes ever recorded in this region. The huge destruction of buildings and infrastructure has so far resulted in nearly 30,000 deaths (as of 12 February 2023) and tens of thousands injured, with many victims still buried under the ruins of houses.
The local aid organisation Kids Paradise is able to provide immediate assistance to the people who lost their homes in the devastating earthquake and now have to survive in the worst conditions. Most of the people have to stay out in the open, in temperatures around freezing point, and so far have only very limited access to food and drinkable water.

Idea

Kids Paradise is very well networked in the devastated area, as the organization has been active here for many years. Through its knowledge of local structures and coordination points, as well as contacts with other aid organizations, Kids Paradise is able to act very quickly and provide people with emergency shelter, food, drink and other urgent relief supplies.
In northwestern Syria, the need for emergency aid is particularly urgent in the regions of Idlib and Aleppo, where hardly any international aid has yet arrived.

Implementation

As a first step, emergency shelters are to be built for around 1,500 families and meals, drinking water, hygiene kits, clothes, stoves and heating oil distributed to up to 200,000 people every day in northwestern Syria. Earthquake victims also urgently need psychosocial support. Kids Paradise aims to provide therapy sessions for 4,000 affected children and refer particularly vulnerable children to specialized centers.

Kids Paradise supports thousands of people and launches new project in northwest Syria

Kids Paradise helps thousands of earthquake survivors. They are also launching a new project to provide prospects for children and single mothers in northwest Syria through summer activities and education.

Kids Paradise was able to support thousands of earthquake survivors in recent weeks thanks to generous and immediate donations. The team evacuated 500 survivors from the destroyed city of Antakya and took them to safe places. In addition, 2000 warm blankets were distributed to people who had to live in leaky tents or on the streets.

A tent camp was set up near the affected village of Jinderes in Syria, providing temporary shelter for 275 people. The camp has sanitation facilities, a fresh water tank and was supplied with food and necessary goods. The Kids Paradise team also organised play activities for the children to bring them some joy.

In the Idlib region, almost ten thousand food rations were distributed to residents of several camps. In addition, 2000 children received care kits with hygiene products and toys. However, psychosocial support for traumatised children is still insufficient. The emergency situation in the region persists and will continue for a long time.

For these reasons, the Kids Paradise team has launched a second project on our platform: Psychosocial Support for Children and Single Mothers in Northwest Syria. Most people in Northwest Syria, especially children, are suffering from the indescribable trauma of the earthquake. Thanks to this project, 600 children will be able to participate in summer activities and psychosocial care. In addition, Kids Paradise is offering 30 single women the opportunity to receive training in handicrafts.

Kids Paradise expresses its sincere gratitude for the generous support and will continue to work for the people in northwest Syria and southern Turkey.

Earthquake Relief: Successes and Challenges in Supporting Survivors.

Thanks to the large and immediate donations, Kids Paradise has been able to support thousands of earthquake survivors in the past weeks.

We would like to give you an update on the progress of the project, which we are able to carry out thanks to your generous donations. The situation in the earthquake-ravaged city of Antakya was still very dangerous weeks after the disaster, and many people had neither transportation nor a safe destination. However, Kids Paradise team managed to evacuate and transport 500 survivors to safe places.

We also distributed 2000 warm blankets to those who had to live in leaky tents or even on the streets in the first weeks after the quake. A tent camp was set up near the hard-hit village of Jinderes in Syria within a few days. Before the 50 sturdy tents could be erected, the ground had to be pressed and covered with a layer of gravel as drainage for the frequent heavy rains. A total of 275 people (including 57 women and 175 children) have found a temporary home in the tents. The camp also has two sanitary facilities and a fresh water tank. The residents were provided with basic necessities (hygiene kits, clothing, etc.) and received food rations for the first few days. The team also engaged in small play activities with the children to bring them some joy.

In Idlib region, we distributed almost ten thousand food rations to the residents of several camps. In addition, 2000 children received a care kit with hygiene products, pens and a few toys. Psychosocial support is crucial, especially for the traumatized children, but unfortunately (still) available in far too few quantities.

Unfortunately, at the moment we cannot expand the project or continue it only to a limited extent, as no further donations are available. As soon as we receive further financial support, we will be able to expand the projects as we wish, because the emergency situation still exists and will continue for a long time. The people in this region already had to live under the most difficult humanitarian conditions before the earthquake, which were further aggravated by the earthquake.

Once again, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your generous support and will continue to keep you informed of the progress of the project.

With warmest regards,

Simone Jeger (Kids Paradise)

Despite another earthquake, emergency aid could be provided

Two weeks after the biggest earthquake disaster in many years, there were again casualties and deaths in Turkey and Syria on Monday due to a strong aftershock. Despite the difficult situation, Kids Paradise was able to implement initial measures.

After the Kids Paradise office in Antakya was completely destroyed, the organisation team is currently in Reyhanli on the border between Turkey and Syria to coordinate the emergency relief projects. The team experienced the renewed earthquakes first hand, but fortunately were able to bring themselves and the remaining residents of the 5-storey building to safety in time. The renewed quake has caused great panic among the people, and many do not dare to go back into their houses.

From the first days after the earthquake until today, Kids Paradise teams have been working around the clock with various measures in the northwest of Syria and in the south of Turkey. So far, they have been able to support people in the Idlib region (Syria) and in southern Turkey as follows:

- Distribution of 5,000 fresh bread packages.

- Distribution of 1,750 ready-to-eat rations, enough for a family for a whole week.

- Distribution of 5000 ready-to-eat rations, enough for one person for one day.

- 600 people evacuated from earthquake zones to safe areas.

- Distribution of 750 blankets and 300 care kits.

The most urgent need for the affected people is shelter that will give them security and warmth. As tents are sold out in Turkey and Syria, Kids Paradise is now trying to import them. In addition, the effective measures mentioned above will be continued and expanded where possible. The Kids Paradise team continues to rely on all kinds of support. Be it in the form of monetary donations or sharing this appeal for donations. We would like to thank you very much for your support so far!
