Women Empowerment in Nepal
Project SummaryAt the HWC in Nepal, women's empowerment programmes are run. In addition to sewing and jewellery making, we would like to offer cooking and baking. The goal is to provide 10 women with training in cooking and baking, as well as subsequent job opportunities. Please help us!
Background
Nepalese girls are born into a patriarchal society where gender differences are strongly emphasised. This restricts women's freedom in many areas of life. High illiteracy rates, low life expectancy and economic dependency are some of the consequences of discrimination against women in Nepal. In particular, single mothers who are affected by poverty face great challenges. They struggle to provide their children with basic necessities such as food, shelter and education.
The Human Welfare Committee (HWC) addresses these issues by offering such women skills training, education and work opportunities. They work in the HWC's own children's home in Nepal's capital Kathmandu or do part-time jobs after accomplishing training courses in creative activities (jewellery making, sewing, cooking and baking). Currently, the jewellery making programme in particular is well developed. Through the skills they learn, combined with the subsequent job opportunities, the women can become more financially independent and thus offer their children a dignified future.

Idea
In order to advance the Womens Empowerment Programme of the HWC, we want to offer new courses in cooking and baking in addition to the jewellery making programme. The aim of these training courses is to enable the women involved to produce a wide range of cooked and baked goods. The products made are to be offered in nearby local restaurants. In this way, we hope to be able to employ even more women affected by poverty.

Currently, 5 women are involved in the jewellery making programme. For the new cooking and baking programme, we will continue to work with the same women and involve new women in the project. We will give priority to single mothers who lack the financial resources to meet the basic needs of their families.
In March 2023, the cooking and baking programme will start with a total of 10 women and 1 trainer. The women will receive the three-month training free of charge and will be financially compensated during this time. After completion of the training, production is to start, which will offer the women new job opportunities. Based on our experience, this seems to be the most sensible structure. If the women were "only" given new skills, without financial compensation and the prospect of future work, we would not meet their financial challenges.
For a successful start of the cooking and baking programme, the following is needed:
Total: 4'700 CHF
We are overwhelmed that we have already been able to reach the donation target. Any further support will benefit the continuation of the Women Empowerment Programme. Thank you very much!

Initiators
This project is initiated by the Bright Future Nepal - ujyaaloo babishya nepal association. The Bright Future Nepal association has been supporting the Human Welfare Committee financially and ideally since July 2021. Two of the board members, Regina and Muriel, are currently in Nepal for an extended stay and are helping to further develop the HWC.
The HWC is a registered NGO in Nepal with headquarters in Kathmandu. Since 2017, the HWC has been running its own children's home in Kathmandu, where children from poor families, some of whom have lost their closest relatives, receive a safe environment and schooling. Since winter 2019, the HWC also expanded the Women Empowerment Programme with skill trainings, awareness classes and job opportunities offers.
