Giving animals a roof over their head
Project SummaryThe Brazil Pets association works for street animals in Brazil and is building a new rescue centre. Your donation of CHF 35 can help the first planning phase to start and deal with permits for the construction project.
Background
Since March 2018, the association Brasil Pets has been supporting the animal shelter run by Paulinha Silvia in Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro. The animal shelter is run from two sites covering an area of 600m2. When the association Brasil Pets first became aware of Paulinha, she was looking after around 150 stray animals. But with the help of financial support from Brasil Pets and Christian Hirt, this has now risen to around 400 animals, including 320 dogs and 80 cats. Animals aren’t simply plucked from the streets at random, but injured and sick animals are chosen who would die within a few days without our help. Now the time has come to build a bigger site with new infrastructure.
A gift from heaven
The family of a Swiss animal rights activist who died in 2018 is giving his plot of land to the association Brasil Pets and the ASSOCIACAO INSTITUTO PROTECAO E ACAO run by Paulinha Silva, to be used for the purpose of protecting and caring for street animals. The plot measures roughly 2,000m2, and is located about an hour outside Rio de Janeiro.

Idea
When I, Christian Hirt, asked myself six years ago how I could use the rest of my time on Earth wisely, I decided to dedicate myself to animal welfare. So I told my family and my boss and got down to work. I founded the association Brasil Pets together with a good friend of mine in October 2017. In January 2018 I moved to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil to get a different view of the situation and to make contacts. I tried to open up a snack stand to generate a bit of income. Unfortunately this idea failed due to overwork, but the number of animals taken in kept going up and up. So I came back to Switzerland in July 2019 to try and raise the necessary funds. I work here again now and I travel to Brazil 2-3 times a year. My partner manages the animal shelter, so there’s always somebody around who I can trust 100%. At the moment everything can be kept going with a few sponsors, my family and what’s left of my salary. Though we do still need financial support to be able to expand in the future.

The plan is for the Brasil Pets association and the ASSOCIACAO INSTITUTO PROTECAO E ACAO run by Paulinha Silva to use the plot which has been given to us to build an animal sanctuary which is in keeping with nature. Animal facilities should be built using as little concrete as possible. The walls and enclosures should be made from wood and the roofs should be made from straw. Buildings constructed in this way provide shade in the summer and conserve warmth in the winter. Because we’re in a tropical climate with temperatures between 12 and 40°C, we don’t need heating or air-conditioning except for the facilities where the animals are actually housed. For hygiene reasons the floors of the cat and dog housing are made of ceramic tiles; this makes sure that the facilities for the animals being cared for can be kept bacteria and germ-free. The three houses, parts of which have fallen into a state of severe disrepair, are being renovated, with two being converted into accommodation for the carers and one into a quarantine and pet centre. The site needs to be reconnected to the electricity supply, and should use solar energy where possible. Water will be provided from existing wells on site. Since the plot is on a slope, the animal shelters will be located on the edge of the site and designed in a stepped form. This means that there will be enough space in the middle of the new sanctuary for the animals to run free. Despite the sloping ground it may one day also be possible to admit horses, cows or other large stray animals found on the street. The aim is to be able to look after around 800 stray dogs, 200 cats and some large livestock, and give them a roof over their heads.
