Benefit concerts for hospital in Uganda
Project SummaryThe concerts by Christian Wenk and Elina Kaikova with the symphony orchestra nota bene will help to finance a photovoltaic system for the Namutumba Community Hospital to ensure a sustainable and reliable energy supply for the hospital. Every franc helps to increase the donation to the hospital.
Background
Namutumba, a region about 150 km from the capital of Uganda with over 300,000 inhabitants, did not have its own hospital until two years ago.
As a social worker, Job Zilaba is familiar with the problems in Uganda and knows what it means when the nearest hospital is far away. A difficult birth or a bacterial infection can lead to death here. As nothing is happening from the public side, Job decides to build a hospital on his own. While it is not a problem to organize building materials and start construction with the help of the local population, the biggest hurdle to getting the hospital up and running turns out to be organizing the equipment (e.g. hospital beds, laboratory equipment).
In Switzerland "for love" since 2010, Job finds work as an auxiliary nurse at Inselspital Bern and from then on transfers more than half of his income to Namutumba every month. Nevertheless, there is not enough money to open the hospital. Only thanks to several generous donations from Inselspital is it possible to open the hospital in Namutumba in July 2021.
Job is still bearing the staff costs, which is pushing him to his personal financial limits. He is in urgent need of support. Through a personal contact, Job and Christian Wenk met in 2022, and for Christian as a doctor, supporting the Namutumba hospital (financially and with know-how) became a project close to his heart.
This is now a major project, and a large sum needs to be raised for it.
One of the most pressing problems associated with running the hospital is the unreliable power supply. There are 3 to 4 power cuts a week. To bridge these, a diesel generator is used. This is not only a very expensive solution in terms of maintenance and operation, but also more than questionable from an ecological point of view.

Idea
Two great pianists, both paraplegics, are joining forces to support the Namutumba Hospital in Uganda. Together with the symphony orchestra nota bene, Christian Wenk and Elina Kaikova will perform at the Stadtcasino Basel on 25.2.2024 and at the Tonhalle in Zurich on 3.3.2024 to support Christian's heart project. The proceeds, which will go entirely to the project after deduction of costs, will be used to finance a photovoltaic system.
The realization of the concerts in the Stadtcasino Basel and in the Tonhalle Zurich requires a financial outlay of CHF 50,000. With the crowdfunding we want to cover as much of the costs as possible so that the concert proceeds benefit the project in full.

Implementation
Your donation will help to ensure that the concerts can take place and that the photovoltaic system at Namutumba Hospital can be built.
Two works from the romantic repertoire will be performed: the Concerto for Two Pianos by Max Bruch and the Suite Scheherazade by Nicolai Rimski-Korsakow. If you have the time and inclination to attend, tickets can be purchased via ticketino.
The construction of the solar system has been meticulously planned and the profitability calculation drawn up. On site, Job makes sure that everything is going according to plan and reports regularly to Christian. The planned use of solar energy should ensure a sufficient, reliable and ecologically sensible energy supply so that the hospital can function: Operations do not have to be interrupted, the cold chain for blood reserves and medication can be ensured and the hospital can continue to operate at night. The photovoltaic system is designed to fully cover demand. Storage solutions are also planned.

Initiators
Inspired by his nomination as a "Young Global Leader" at the WEF 2013 and the encounters he had there, Christian Wenk established the "Christian Wenk Foundation". From then on, income from lectures and concerts as well as donations enabled the implementation of projects for education & health, such as the construction of schools in Afghanistan and Myanmar and currently the support of the Namutumba Community Hospital in Uganda.
Information about the foundation is available from the medical practice of Christian Wenk, Schenkon, (praxis.christian.wenk@hin.ch) or Eva Mercedes Boll (eva.boll@bluewin.ch).
With the support of the there-for-you foundation.
