Martin is 15 years old and his biggest dream is to become a mechanical engineer. His education is on shaky ground, as his aunt Esther can no longer pay the school fees for her nephew due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Her income from the roadside stand has plummeted from one day to the next due to tourists not visiting. A few years ago, Martin's parents died in a traffic accident. Since then, his aunt has been paying for his living and school expenses.
Esther was able to support Martin's schooling for a few years. The latter seized the opportunity and performed well at school. Martin attended the "Primary School" for 8 years, which corresponds to the elementary school in Switzerland and was partly paid by the government. Now, according to the Kenyan school system, Martin would have to attend the "Secondary School" for the next four years. But unfortunately this is no longer financially supported by the government, but is roughly equivalent to the upper school in the Swiss system. The school costs are disproportionately high compared to the income that people earn there. It has become impossible for Esther to support the school costs for Martin any longer. Her little daughter Joy and her sick mother are also dependent on her earnings.
In order to get ahead in life professionally, one is also dependent on a good education in Kenya. To make matters worse, students are required to pay for school uniforms out of their own pockets. Two sets of uniforms must be available for changing and black shoes must be worn. Martin is growing and in Kenya these clothes and shoes are relatively expensive.
